Former Omaha Royal third baseman Mark Teahen has been named the Kansas City Royals nominee for the 2009 Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy. The award is given annually to the Major League Baseball player who combines a dedication to giving back to the community with outstanding skills on the baseball field.

Teahen has a reputation for being involved in the Kansas City community, including the Challenger Division of Little League Baseball—which allows children with mental and physical disabilities to compete on the baseball field. In addition to donating his time to the effort, he also hosts an offseason fundraiser which benefits the program.

Teahen was also the Royals nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award last season. An article on MLB.com says that he has a huge heart for kids and it lists many of his efforts, including:

  • Donating time to the Royals AbilityCAMP for kids with physical or developmental disabilities.
  • Donating equipment for the playroom at the City Union Mission in Kansas City.
  • Donating time for Ryan Lefebvre’s “Gloves for Kids” annual event.
  • And many others . . .

Teahen spent portions of the 2004, 2005 and 2006 seasons playing for the Omaha Royals. In May of 2006, Teahen was sent to Omaha after struggling at the Major League level. He was hitting just .195 at the time. He hit .380 while in Omaha and when he was recalled a month later, he caught fire, ending the season in Kansas City with a .290 average while blasting 18 HR and 69 RBI. He’s been in Kansas City ever since.

If you’d like to vote for Teahen, or one of the other 29 representatives, you may do so by going to www.chevy.com/clemente starting tomorrow through October 4, 2009.
