Alex Gordon is hoping to make his Rosenblatt Stadium debut tonight (as a professional) when the Omaha Royals take on the New Orleans Zephyrs at 6:35 pm, but the weather may not cooperate. He plans to travel to NW Arkansas to play for the Kansas City Royals' Double-A affiliate team tomorrow. Either way, he says his recovery is still a work in progress after coming off hip surgery on April 17.

“I played a couple of games in Arizona—only a couple of games in the field [he played DH in a few others] and like I said, it’s a work in progress,” Gordon said. “My legs aren’t really under me yet. I’m just trying to get the strength back. The best thing is the pain is gone. I’m not playing with pain so that’s the most important thing.”

Gordon was the Royals’ first round pick (second overall) in the 2005 draft out of the University of Nebraska. He started his professional career in 2006 in Double-A Wichita and was named the Baseball America Minor League Player of the Year. That was enough to convince the Royals to bring him to the big leagues to start the 2007 season. He hit .247 in his rookie season in Kansas City with 15 HR and 60 RBI. In 2008 he hit .260 with 16 HR and 59 RBI.

Like any athlete, he’s found it difficult to sit and watch his teammates play. “It’s been the toughest watching the games on TV,” Gordon said. “It was a lot easier when they were doing well and they were winning. They’re going through a little tough stretch right now, but that’s probably the toughest wishing you could be there and you’re not.”

He said his hip started hurting on Opening Day, April 7, in Chicago. He doesn’t know for sure how the injury happened. He said that as the team was standing for the National Anthem in the cold “something hit him”—apparently meaning he felt something in his hip. Then he felt something in his hip when he hit a home run that day.

It’s been nearly 10 weeks since his surgery and he’s working hard to get back on the field in Kansas City. He said he’s thinking he’ll be back after the All-Star break, but of course, that’s up to the ballclub.

After he met with the media, he took batting practice indoors (since it was raining). He hit from a tee and seemed to be swinging pain free.
