Maxwell makes big news on the Billboard 200 albums chart, entering at No. 1 with "BLACKsummers'night" and a career-high sales week of 316,000. It's his second chart-topper. The last time Maxwell graced fans with new material was the 2001 release of the disc “Now” which also opened at No. 1 with a then-best 296,000 copies sold.
BLACK Summers' Night," which hit retailers last Tuesday, is the first installment of a planned trilogy. The remaining two records--"Black SUMMERS' Night" and "Black Summers' NIGHT"--are slated for release in 2010 and 2011, respectively, according to a press release. The soul singer reunited with long-time collaborator Hod David for the album's songwriting and production.
Maxwell, who headlined the main stage of New Orleans' Essence Music Festival July 4, spent much of last fall on the road, marking his first live shows in six years. He performed for the first time in South Africa at the Macufe Music Festival last October.
Maxwell has grown as an artist and despite abandoning his signature curly afro, it is apparent that he is still in tune with delivering authenticity to fans. The only thing that is slightly disappointing is that the disc has only nine tracks. This most likely was a strategic ploy to make the listener want to hear more and be more than eager to purchase the complete trilogy.
"BLACKsummers’night" is available in stores and on iTunes.
