To be honest, Peaceable Kingdom, a non-profit animal shelter located at 1049 MacArthur Rd South in Whitehall, PA doesn't have the best accommodations, and it isn't the nicest looking shelter in the Lehigh Valley by any stretch of the imagination. The property is located in an undesirable busy commercial district with business and shopping traffic whizzing by at all hours. The shelter building was formerly occupied by Shear Heaven Pet Store - the old sign still hangs outside. Only part of the building is rented (at a whopping $1,500 a month), so conditions can be a bit crowded. So what's the good news?  Since operations began in1998 over 6,000 homeless dogs and cats have been adopted. And over 1,000 animals were adopted in 2008 alone. Peaceable Kingdom provides a much needed service here in the Lehigh Valley.  Without this shelter, many homeless animals would suffer a very sad fate.

Peaceable Kingdom has been at it's current Whitehall location for 5 years. They currently care for over 100 cats and kittens and 20 dogs, some of which are in foster homes. Founder  Liz Jones proudly describes PK as a 'humane shelter'. She explains, "We foster or place every single animal in our care unless they are too sick or due to some other dire situation. We rarely have to make the decision to euthanize." For other shelters, this is not the case. Adoptable animals in traditional shelters can be killed because of how many there are, their color, their age, a sniffle, funds are low, it's raining outside...and so it goes.

Without their dedicated volunteers, Peaceable Kingdom couldn't exist. Month after month, 365 days a year, these generous animal advocate warriors give up their own time to care for the endless stream of animals that come into residence there. More volunteers are always needed either at the shelter or off-site at fundraisers and monthly adoption events.

Shelter income only comes from public donations, adoption fees, spay and neutering fees or grants received.  What is probably needed most of all is a new home for the shelter itself.  Peaceable Kingdom is looking for a business, agency, or a special someone who could provide the means for them to move their shelter operation to a new location.  Larger, better suited accommodations are desperately needed to properly care for the animals. Calling all life-savers and angels!

On a final note:  Please don't buy while shelter animals die.
