Movie trailers are much like books and their covers - films are often pre-judged by how well the trailer fares, bringing praise or criticism before the film even hits theaters. So when IFC announced their list of the 50 greatest trailers, the criteria were simple. "Ultimately, we decided that the best trailers are those that most effectively combine art and commerce, and that sell and entertain with equal skill."
The list encompasses previews for classic films, mediocre films, and some that were "absolutely bombs." The leaders that made IFC's list made their mark as "a version of cinema that's essentially utopian, in which every film is perfect, if only for two and a half minutes."
