American Meb Keflezighi won the 2009 ING New York Marathon on Sunday, but his thoughts were already running towards Boston--the 2010 Boston Marathon that is. Meb's win on Sunday ended a 27 year American drought in New York, but a similar lack of American first place finishers plagues the city of Boston. Greg Meyer was the last American man to win the race in 1983. Meb also toyed with reporters after his win by hinting at adding his name to the short list of Americen men-- Bill Rodgers and Alberto Salazar-- who have won both New York and Boston during their careers.
"What a great way to fill out the resume by winning Boston," he said. "That would be huge," (USA Today)
Meb said he received a t-shirt from his coach and family in 2006 that said" He who strives will succeed" and used that as his mantra for training. After running 2:09:15 for the win on Sunday, Meb said he felt fine and comfortable jogging the next day--clear indicators for him that he is fit and has trained smart. Assuming he is healthy come April, the attractive prize money in Boston (he received $200,000 this Sunday in New York ) plus the prestige of the double win may just put Meb over the edge and Bostonians could see him cruising up Heartbreak Hill in 2010.
Meb is also considering running the flatter and faster London Marathon, which is also in April, but it seems as if he is leaning towards another 26.2 on American soil. If he chooses to run the Boston Marathon, Keflezighi will most likely have to face his foe from Sunday's New York Marathon, Robert Cheruiyot, who is a four-time Boston winner.
