The Manchester Road Race in Manchester, CT dishes up a healthy portion of competition every year on Thanksgiving Day. This 4.748 mile course has become known as the turkey trot of all turkey trots in the Northeast as over 10,000 line up each year from all over the country to tackle the course. The 73rd Manchester Road Race begins at 10am on Thanksgiving Day (November 26, 2009) on Main Street.
The Manchester course is notoriously hilly, challenging runners ranging from elite status to recreational. The race is the third largest road race in New England and besides attracting over 10,000 runners, over 40,000 spectators line the streets to cheer them on. There is always something to see at The Manchester Road Race-- either dueling elite runners or your neighbor running with a costume in the cold!
The 2009 Manchester Road Race certainly won't disappoint as top male and female finishers from last year are set to compete. Martin Fagan of Ireland--and standout at Providence College-- will defend his title and time of 21:41 against last year's runner-up Haron Legat of Kenya. For the women, 2008 winner Teyba Naser of Bahrain will again have to go head-to-head with second and third place finishers Amy Rudolph of Providence and Diane Nukuri Johnson of Burundi. Rudolph has won this race five times and was a member of the US Olympic team. The top man and woman at this year's race will receive $3000 from the USATF. Check out the race site for more details!
Happy Thanksgiving and happy turkey trotting!
