2009 Marine Corp Marathon runs Sunday October 25
The 34th Marine Corps Marathon is this Sunday October 25, 2009 in Washington D.C. Also known as "The People's Marathon" the event is held annually on the last Sunday of October, just before the November 10 birthday of the Marine Corps. With over 20,000 people expected to tackle the 26.2, the Marine Corps Marathon is the largest marathon that doesn't offer prize money or appearance fees to draw in elite and professional runners-- over 11,000 first-time marathoners are expected on Sunday!
In 2008, Andrew Dumm won the men's race in 2:22:44 and Cate Fenster bested the rest of the women in 2:48:55. The course is USATF certified and is extremely spectator friendly--the race website even has a list of the best spectator spots! This year's race also offers a 10k option that starts on the National Mall.
The race began 34 years ago as military interest in America declined after the Vietnam War, yet endurance running was gaining speed. Colonel Andrew Fowler made a pitch to the Marine Corps' head committee to start a marathon to promote good will, showcase the Marine's and serve even as a recruiting tool. Today, the marathon is officially the 5th largest in the United States and the 10th largest in the world!

- Reservoir Road from MacArthur Boulevard to Canal Road
- MacArthur Boulevard from Foxhall Road to Reservoir Road
- Foxhall Road from Canal Road to MacArthur Boulevard
- M Street from Canal Road to Wisconsin Avenue
- Wisconsin Avenue from M Street to K Street
- K Street from Wisconsin Avenue to Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway
- Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway from K Street to Independence Avenue
- Memorial Bridge
- West Potomac Park
- East Potomac Park (People still can reach the Golf Course and Tennis Courts.)
- Maine Avenue from East Basin Drive to Independence Avenue
- Independence Avenue from Maine Avenue to Ohio Drive
- Ohio Drive between Independence Avenue and Lincoln Circle
- Lincoln Circle from Ohio Drive to Henry Bacon Drive
- 23rd Street from Lincoln Circle to Constitution Avenue
- Constitution Avenue from Henry Bacon Drive to 15th Street
- 15th Street from Constitution Avenue to Independence Avenue
- 17th Street from Constitution Avenue to Independence Avenue
- Madison Drive from 15th Street to 3rd Street
- 3rd Street from Pennsylvania Ave to Maryland Avenue
- Pennsylvania Avenue from 3rd Street to East Capitol Circle
