Runners battled the elements on Sunday, October 18 at the 2009 Baystate Marathon in Lowell, Massachusetts. The weather was raw--in the high 30s with rain and snow--but over 1500 endurance enthusiasts came prepared for the race, also serving as the official USATF New England Marathon Championships.
The flat and fast marathon course is notorious for lending a helping hand to runners aiming to qualify for the B.A.A. Boston Marathon in April. In fact, in 2008 over 38% of Baystate runners qualified for the big show! Check out this table to see how fast your feet need to move to qualify for the Boston Marathon.
This year's race--even though plagued by New England weather woes-- still brought some true competitors to the line. Brandon Newbould of Dover, New Hampshire covered the course in a quick 2:27:53 over Justin Fyffe of Vermont in 2:28:15. In the women's race, Sara Donahue of Vermont stole the show with a 2:51:19 win over the rest of the field.
