Wardrobe Diaries: 30s

When we are in our teens and twenties we make a lot of fashion mishaps before we find our identity, but being 30+ and not dressing age appropriate is ghastly.

It was 1:32pm to be exact when I left a meeting. The light was red so I had a chance to look across the street but what I saw made me gasp. I saw the glare of a 30+ year old woman wearing hot pink tights that coordinated perfectly with her fuchsia wool coat and white furry boots. I could not believe my eyes. Here is this 30+ year old woman drawing the wrong attention to herself and yet she is carrying herself as if she had on a gorgeous ensemble.

I immediately thought to myself how can I approach her to give her some styling advice. Too late I froze up and she’s gone. So that made me think, why do people go on dressing as if they are stuck in the wrong age or poorly when there are so many department stores that carry affordable and tasteful clothing lines for all ages. I don’t think I will ever understand how a person can look in their closet and not see that they need to upgrade their wardrobe? I decided to start a Wardrobe Diaries series to cover all ages.

Saturday morning I got all dolled up and I went out to Pentagon City to interview anyone that would talk to me. At 3:46pm I approached a woman, let's call her Jane. Jane appears to be a 30+ year old woman. She is an attractive red head woman wearing jeans that cover her stomach, she has on a coat that swallows her, ballerina slippers and she is bare faced. My interview went as follows:

Leslie: (pen and paper in hand) Excuse me Mam. My name is Leslie and I am a wardrobe stylist writing a fashion article. I wanted to know if you would allow me to interview you on a topic. I promise it will not take more than three minutes.

Jane: (laughs) Why me?

Leslie: Jane (I hug her) do you know that you are not dressing age appropriate and I can turn you into all types of fabulous!?!

Jane: (holds her face in shame or shock) Are you serious?

Leslie: (serious face) Yes Jane. Do you know that you can still be casual, fabulous and dress age appropriate?

Jane: (laughing) If you can show me how I can feel just as comfortable and looking as you say fabulous I will try to keep up the look.

Leslie: (ecstatic) Really…can I briefly show you now?

Jane: Sure why not?

I took Jane into Nordstrom and we spent a total of 20 minutes. She bought a stylish pair of jeans that I begged her to wear out the store. She asked me for my business card and I left Pentagon City feeling like all kinds of happy for bringing fabulous into someone’s life. I feel great because I just proved my point that you don’t have to break your bank account to feel happy about looking great!.

I encourage everyone to dress age appropriate and if you need help don't be afraid to hire a personal stylist to help take you to another level of fabulous. The 30+ woman should dress in tailored pieces in crisp and bold (IT season) colors, a mean stiletto or boot, large clutch purses and/or handbags and statement jewelry.
