The University of Washington athletic department announced a news conference would occur at 3:00 p.m. earlier today, at which time current USC defensive coordinator Nick Holt would be announced as the Huskies' new defensive coordinator.
That press conference was postponed (apparently Holt had trouble getting into Seattle earlier today), but even before that happened, this was a strange situation.
When new UW head coach Steve Sarkisian was hired last month, he tried to bring on Holt as his defensive coordinator, but Holt turned him down. He then asked USC secondary coach Rocky Seto about the same position. Seto flirted with the idea for awhile before saying no as well, despite having family in the Seattle area. (Seto was given the title of assistant head coach of defense at USC after deciding to stay.)
Apparently that prompted Sarkisian to renew -- and redouble -- his efforts to woo Holt, this time with better results.
After a Seattle newspaper reported on Saturday that Holt might still be a candidate, the LA Daily News' Scott Wolf asked him about it, but Holt said he was not interested in the job and that nothing had happened since he turned it down last month.
"That was like three weeks ago, I don't know why it's still coming up," he told Wolf.
Two days later, Holt was officially announced as the Huskies' new defensive coordinator.
The question you might be asking yourself -- apart from whether Holt's comments to Wolf qualify as a "Saban" -- is why he would leave his position at USC, where he coordinated one of the best defenses in college football history (and was paid more than $500,000), to take over the defense at a school that hasn't won a game since 2007.
The answer is simple.
