As winter approaches, now is the time to prepare a house against the winter cold. Especially for the elderly, it's very important to make the house as warm and draft free as possible. Follow these tips to weather-proof a house for the winter:
1. Stop the draft which comes under doors by using a Twin draft guard. This nifty invention actually fits under the door thereby reducing the risk of tripping over it. You can purchase these at your local Bed, Bath and Beyond. To find a BBB nearby to Silver Spring, MD, click here.
2. Curtail drafts around windows by plugging any holes with caulk. Additional drafts can be stopped by covering the windows with plastic. All you need is a local Home Depot and a hair dryer to add this plastic. Your elderly friend will love you for it. Adding heavy, insulated sheers will add additional protection against the cold.
3. Purchase an inexpensive ceramic heater to use wherever your elderly friend tends to be during the day. These little ceramic heaters are so much safer than the heaters in the past and quite economical. They throw off a lot of heat for small price. Pick one up at your local Best Buy.
4. Load your elderly friend's bed with lots of warm quilts. Down is always a good quilt material and light weight also. Layering many quilts on the bed will allow your senior citizen friend to adjust their temperature during the night. Alternatively, a new electric blanket might be just the right gift.
