The new US College Hockey Online poll was released yesterday, and it's an unwelcome sight to Gopher hockey nation. The Gophers are unranked for the third week in a row, and that shows just how crucial winning is. Just think...if the Gophers had won games in the opening series at Grand Forks and at home against Denver, they might still be ranked.
Miami entered the season as 2008-09's bridesmaid after losing the title game to Boston University. Now, they've started the year with the bullseye, entering the season as the nation's top team. This is an accolade they've earned with only one loss and tie to their credit in ten games. North Dakota comes in as the #2 team in the land with the same lone loss and tie, but having played two fewer games, this is the reason for the push back. All in all, two solid teams playing hockey right now.
Minnesota is unranked for the third week in a row, and a win against Wisconsin last weekend actually hurt them if you think logically. As of now, they would sit 25th in the country but the actual poll is only fit for the top 20 schools. Hopefully they can deal with the loss of Sam Lofquist (quit school and team to pursue junior hockey, which I find quite selfish) and buck up to get a hopeful sweep of Bemidji State this weekend.
Surprise of the week: Michigan State, who moved seven positions upward to 13th from entering the poll at 20th last week. Watch out!

My impressions on Sam Lofquist are to come...but can the Gophers afford to bring back the roving forward? See my impressions on this topic tomorrow. Until then, I'll see you at the rink!
