BEIJING, CHINA – The city’s Chaoyang District is offering cash bonuses of $29,000 to attract overseas professionals, state media said Friday.
Huang Bo, an official at the central business district overseas talent center, said it wants to recruit 100 expatriates over the next five to 10 years, the China Daily reported.
The Phoenix Plan project wants professionals under 55 with a minimum of an overseas master’s degree. They should have held key positions at renowned organizations or worked as professors at top universities.
If selected, they will receive a sign-on bonus of $29,000 and agree to work in the city for at least six months. Those who want to start their own business can also qualify for subsidies and other perks such as free accommodation.
The center has already received and is reviewing some applications and plans to announce results by next month.
“Overseas students, scholars and other talented individuals are scattered across many different countries and it is very difficult to reach them all. We are trying to contact overseas universities, student unions and embassies. It will take time,” the newspaper quoted Zhou Weiying, a spokeswoman for the Beijing overseas talent center.
