Looking for a casual, inexpensive restaurant that's perfect for young kids? Want something different? And definitely no lengthy lines? I revisited a place for lunch today that I hadn't been to in a while, and I was reminded how terrific the food is.
I'm from the South, and adore good BBQ. Frankly, I've found it hard to come by in Northern Virginia, which surprised me. Boss Hogs', in McLean of all places, does it right. It's a little hard to find, though it's right off of Old Dominion Drive in the heart of the village of McLean. Look for the intersection with Old Chain Bridge Road, take a hard left which will put you on Elm Street. It's right across from the McDonald's.
Lots of tables, clean and very simple, you order at the counter and take your plastic basket to the table. It's a small detail, but definitely felt like the old days to me, which I enjoyed. The chopped pork is incredibly moist and tasty. It was so good, I only used sauce on half of it! There's brisket that will melt in your mouth, and ribs of course. Sandwiches are served on deliciously soft, chewy rolls. They have a surprisingly ample selection of homemade sides. I went traditional today, with crunchy, tangy slaw and baked beans that had the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. The food is mild enough for younger kids, and adults can load on the sauce and spicy mustard sauce if they wish.
Apparently, they're also open for breakfast (eggs and pancakes), though I've only eaten there for lunch. From late April until Thanksgiving, they operate their giant frozen custard machine for a special treat.
There's a TV on the wall and, as I said, it's casual. It's rarely crowded, which is a huge plus if you're with kids. I attribute this to the fact that there's no sidewalk traffic and you really need to know it's back there. It's not far from Tyson's mall if you want to catch a movie or do some shopping. They also cater. No credit cards. Closed Sundays.
You can find Boss Hog's at 6811 Elm St Mc Lean, VA 22101
