Do you enjoy being one if the first to see new movie releases? Would you like to see them for free? That's right, free!! I discovered a wonderful resource for free movie passes. It's called FilmMetro, and you can join, free of charge, and be among the first to see new releases at area movie theaters.

Last week, my son and I saw the premiere for InkHeart at the Tysons's Mall AMC 16.(Incidentally, it's a great family film although some of the scenes of the daughter in peril might be a little intense for children younger than 8. Brendan Fraser won't be winning any Oscars for this, though Helen Mirren was terrific and Andy Serkis as the evil Capricorn was wonderful).

Here's how it works:

  • You sign up with FilmMetro
  • Screening locations vary, and you won't know where the premiere or screening is until you print the ticket
  • If you decide not to attend, you are asked to  "release" your tickets so others may have the chance to go
  • Movie locations vary from the AMC 16 at Tyson's to the Mazza Gallerie in Friendship Heights, to the Cinema Drafthouse in Falls Church, and others in the Metro area
  • Each pass admits 2 people
  • Be forewarned.... some movies will have a huge line and they always release more passes than seats to insure a full house. Still, it's a great way to see new movies absolutely free. They recommend arriving at least an hour ahead, although for some films you may need to arrive much earlier
  • Sometimes there may be surveys or focus groups afterwards, other times there won't. We did not have one yesterday (but I did get a t-shirt from the radio station).

Some films are sponsored by area radio stations, and last week the DJ from 107.93 (WRQX)  got the audience warmed up and called out questions in order to give away prizes beforehand. You're likely to find yourself in line among groups that take advantage of this wonderful opportunity on a regular basis. Thanks to my careful eavesdropping, l was able to deduce this was how the extremely approachable and friendly  group in front of me had obtained their tickets. They were only too happy to share their inside info with me, and I wanted to pass it along to you.
