Holidays are a time for gathering together with family and friends in celebration.  Unfortunately, they can wreak havoc on an individual with empathic abilities.  With the 4th of July upon us, it’s time to discuss what may be in store for an Empath and how to cope.

Even though the fireworks are supposed to be exploding high in the sky it can feel as though the real fireworks are taking place within the Empath’s own head.  This can be the case anytime a number of people gather.  Holidays, however, are especially dangerous because they are times of fun.  It’s human nature to expect frivolity and laughter when celebrating with family, not a full-scale mental assault.

Yet a mental attack is just what the Empath can expect if they are unprepared.

Blocking out the emotions of strangers is already a daunting task; blocking out family can often prove impossible.  Why?  People have deep emotional connections with their family from years together and are not used to shielding themselves from them.  This is especially true of empathic individuals.  Throw in some explosions in the sky, a barbeque at the lake, a few parades and everyone gathered together in the North Texas heat and….well, you’ve got a power keg with a short fuse, ready to combust!

For those Empaths unfamiliar with psychic shielding techniques, here are a few basic strategies to coping with the 4th of July holiday that should get you though until you can develop your shield:

•    Take a few minutes before interacting with any groups of people (family, friends or strangers) to focus on finding that inner calm within.

•    Make sure to have a stash of headache medicine handy as much of the emotional “garbage” picked up from others can manifest as a headache.

•    If a conversation with someone gives you a bad feeling, don’t be afraid to cut it short and walk away.  (It is, after all, your holiday too.)

•    Be aware of your emotional state throughout the day and evening.  If you find you don’t like the way you feel or the thoughts in your head, change them.

•    Don’t forget to take time out for yourself.  Even if you can only get five minutes to yourself here and there, take it!  Those little recharge sessions are just what you need to keep yourself centered and shake off any residual emotional energy from those around you.

•    Have fun!  Almost nothing is more powerful than the emotion of happiness.  If you can have some genuine good times then even the most sensitive Empath can block out many of the less positive emotions from others.

Of course, none of the above techniques are perfect substitutes for psychic shielding.  After the fireworks cease to pop in the night and the family has long since left you alone to clean the grill, make some time to look into shielding methods that work for you.  In the end, your mental stability will thank you.

Have a fun and safe 4th of July, y’all!
