Perhaps the best way to answer this question is to go in the opposite direction and define what psychic gifts are not. Unfortunately, once someone mentions the word psychic, people either envision a woman in a gypsy style dress peering into a crystal ball while talking about all the grave things she sees in your future…or they immediately ask to be told their future. The media, it seems, has done just as much harm to the psychic community as have the fruit bat quack psychics within the community.
Are there those among us who have the genuine ability to see the future with the aid of a crystal ball? Sure. Do they all dress like gypsy queens? Probably not. Can some psychics foretell a person’s future at the very first meeting? You bet!
Of course, to say all psychics behave this way or look that way would be a serious error.
The problem with the portrayal of psychics on television programs or in movies – besides the fact that they usually make them out to be crazy people on the verge of a total psychotic break from reality – is they tend to deal in muddled stereotypes. This has led to people with genuine psychic or intuitive abilities to shy away from calling themselves a psychic simply because they do not see the future in a crystal ball or get overcome by visions of future events.
While not considering oneself a psychic isn’t an issue, per se, it does cause problems if the Sensitive in question lets other influences convince them they’re crazy or mentally unstable because of the way they perceive the world around them. For the one person out there who’s never wondered if they were crazy, it is unpleasant, to say the very least.
Rather than shying away from those natural gifts they were born with or the abilities they have developed over the years, the novice psychic should embrace their abilities as a part of who they are.
