Tomorrow, October 10th, & Sunday, October 11th, St. Luke’s is hosting a grand opening celebration to announce their new outpatient center in the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The hours for each day are 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, & there are many free activities for all ages.

Included in the free activities are refreshments, face painting, & balloon making. A local DJ will be providing music, & you can take a tour to meet the staff.

More importantly, however, are the free screenings they’ll provide both days. The interactive health screenings include blood pressure, cholesterol, osteoporosis, body fat, & balance. Of these, the first three are incredibly important (not that the others aren't!).

High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for stroke or heart attack. Nearly half of those who have it don’t even know it. Cholesterol is another major risk factor with heart disease deaths, &, like high blood pressure, often goes unnoticed. Both problems can be easily treated with life style changes & medicines. However, you have to know about it first!

And for women, an osteoporosis check is vital, especially women who are pre or post menopausal. Men can be affected by it as well, however, the ratio is about 80% women to 20% men. Although there is no cure, it, too, can be treated, especially if caught early.

On a lighter note, St. Luke’s has partnered with the Upper Perkiomen Chamber of Commerce to provide a free shuttle to the annual autumn train excursion. Train shuttles will run every 15-25 minutes to the Pennsburg train station. Additional parking is available at Lighthouse Fellowship Church, which is across the street from the new outpatient center.

Windy Springs Farms will provide a “pumpkin patch”, where kids can purchase their own pumpkins. They’ll also provide a farmer’s market.

You can read more about this event online at St. Luke’s Health Network. Or, you can call 1.877.610.6161. Handy tip, though. You’ll be greeted by a lovely recorded message, but please don’t press “0” to bypass it. You’ll be transferred to the hospital’s main switchboard, who’ll switch you right back to the recording. And, depending upon the switchboard operator, you may get a frosty response. Just saying; I’m here to help, folks!
