ORLANDO, Fla. --- A disgruntled former employee of an Orlando based engineering firm opened fire Friday afternoon killing one person and leaving five others wounded.
The gunman, Jason Rodriguez, 40, surrendered to officers three hours later, after being spotted at his mother’s home.
When a reporter outside the police station asked Rodriguez why he did it, he replied: “Because they left me to rot.”
Orlando Police Chief Val Demings said Rodriguez brought a handgun to the firm in a downtown office tower where he once worked as an engineer, but investigators are not sure what his motive was.
"This is a tragedy, no doubt about it, especially on the heels of the tragedy in Fort Hood that is on our minds," Demings said. "I'm just glad we don't have any more fatalities or any more injuries than we currently have."
Demings said all five survivors were listed in stable condition and all were from the offices of Reynolds Smith & Hill.
A company spokesman confirms that Rodriguez worked for the firm as an entry-level engineer and was terminated in 2007 due to poor performance standards.
During the lunchtime shooting, interstate 4 was closed in both directions and nearby schools were locked down until the alleged gunman was apprehended.
Calls to the Orlando police department regarding Rodriguez’s charges and bail remained unanswered at the time of this report. .
