Here is what has been going on in the world of MMA over the weekend.
Thiago Alves will be looking to get back in the win column at UFC 107 against fellow Brazilian, Paulo Thiago. MMA Mania reported on this last week.
Alves lost a unanimous decision to UFC welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre at UFC 100. The loss left the American Top Team standout with a record of 16-6. Prior to his loss to GSP, Alves last loss was to Jon Fitch back in June of 2006.
Thiago is also coming off a loss to Fitch and that bout also took place at UFC 100. The Brazilian police officer shocked the MMA world when he knocked out Fitch's teammate, Josh Koshcheck at UFC 95 in his first bout with the organization.
While Alves is no slouch on the ground, he will look to use his superior striking abilities against Thiago. A win by Alves will get him back on track towards a rematch with St. Pierre. It could happen sooner rather than later as the UFC is lacking in worthy candidates for GSP's title.
Dennis Hallman will make his return to the UFC at The Ultimate Fighter 10 finale in December as he takes on John Howard in a welterweight matchup. Hallman is best known for submitting UFC legend and former welterweight champion, Matt Hughes twice. Their first matchup took place back in 1998 at an Extreme Challenge event. Hallman submitted Hughes in just 17 seconds with a guillotine choke. They would meet again at UFC 29 in 2000. Once again Hallman was able to submit Hughes, this time it took 20 seconds and the win came via an armbar.
Howard recently defeated Tamdan McCrory at UFC 101 via split decision. The win raised Howard's overall record to 12-4 and put him at 2-0 inside the octagon, both wins coming via split decision. MMA Weekly has the full report up on their website.
It looks as though the BJ Penn-Diego Sanchez bout will be replacing the Rashad Evans-Rampage Jackson bout as the main event of UFC 107. Although the UFC has not released anything regarding the delay of the Evans-Jackson matchup, all signs are pointing in that direction as Jackson will begin shooting the new A-Team movie and will not have enough time to train for the December 12th bout in Memphis, TN. The whole reason for the show in Memphis was because it was Rampage's hometown. Thankfully the show will still have an exciting main event as Penn defends his lightweight title against Sanchez.
