Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir is being rumored as a potential opponent for Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 which is scheduled to take place December 12th from the FedEX Forum in Memphis, TN.
MMA Bay has a relationship with Wolfslair Academy where Kongo trains and is basing this on sources close to Kongo and the academy.
Kongo is coming off a lose to Cain Velasquez at UFC 99 in a fight that he took on short notice. Up until that point he won three fights in a row and was moving up the heavyweight ranks toward a title shot. He is 14-5-1 throughout his career including 7-3 inside the octagon. His biggest win of his career came against Mirko "Cro-Cop" Filipovic at UFC 75. He has added a nice ground and pound attack to his already stellar kickboxing skills.
Mir took a severe beating at the hands of Brock Lesnar at UFC 100 in a bout that unified the UFC heavyweight championship. Mir was coming off the biggest win of his career at UFC 92. He became the first man to finish former UFC & Pride heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira when he knocked him out in the second round.
Mir is 12-4 in his mixed martial arts career including 10-4 fighting for the UFC. Mir was riding a three fight winning streak that included handing Lesnar a loss in his UFC debut back in February of 2008 at UFC 81. With that victory Mir landed a spot opposite Moguiera as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter season eight. He has been through a lot of ups and downs in his career. He became UFC heavyweight champion back in 2004 when he defeated Tim Sylvia by breaking his arm. He then was in a horrific motorcycle accident and went on a downward spiral that saw him get hooked on pain medication and alcohol.
He would be out of action for almost two full years and returned to face Marcio Cruz and lost via first round knockout. Many people say he came back too soon. He would go 1-1 in his next two fights including a brutal knockout loss to Brandon Vera. After rededicating himself Mir came back and started to look like the old Frank Mir. While his standup has improved he will obviously look to take Kongo to the ground where he will hold a significant advantage. If Mir is able to get Kongo down, it will not take long before he has a limb to grab hold off and Kongo taps out.
Also scheduled for UFC 107 is a grudge match between two former light heavyweight champions as The Ultimate Fighter season 10 coaches Rashad Evans and Memphis' own Quinton "Rampage" Jackson will meet in the night's main event. These two have the utmost disdain for one another and should put on an exciting fight.
