According to a tweet sent out from returning UFC light heavyweight Tito Ortiz, his bout with Mark Coleman at UFC 106 is off and the search for a replacement begins.
While nothing has been released from the UFC, one would have to think there is some merit to this being that it is coming from one of the two combatants.
Ortiz is looking to make a triumphant return to the only organization that he has ever known. The Huntington Beach Bad Boy was last seen in the octagon at UFC 84 where he lost a unanimous decision to eventual light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida.
Since that time Ortiz has gone extensive back surgery to correct a problem that has plagued him for a few years. He also flirted with the idea of signing with EliteXC, Affliction and last but not least Strikeforce.
The UFC is banking on Ortiz to attract fans to buy the pay-per-view. The main event is a battle between two behemoths as Shane Carwin looks to wrestle the UFC heavyweight championship away from Brock Lesnar.
It is believed the UFC gave Ortiz the Coleman bout to help ease his return to the organization. There is no way they want to risk him losing or being embarrassed in his first fight back. For that simple reason we can rule out rematches with Rashad Evans or Forrest Griffin. Some potential fighters that could be available to step in are Stephan Bonnar who has not fought since losing to Coleman at UFC 100. Houston Alexander recently ended a three fight losing streak by defeating Sherman Pendergarst at Adrenaline MMA IV. There aren't many light heavyweights available for this slot.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out, the UFC may decide to bring in a local talent who doesn't pose much of a threat to Ortiz. Either way, these next few days will be interesting.
