Tom Ricketts, his sister Laura and brothers Todd and Pete were officially introduced today as the new Cubs owners. Tom heads the group as chairman of the board with his three siblings as board members. Former Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney is now President of the Cubs.
During a press conference held in the Captain Morgan Club due to heavy rain, Tom Ricketts showed why he and his siblings are the right owners for the Cubs. They "get it." Not only are the Ricketts the new owners, but they're fans. Each of the siblings explained how they came to be Cubs fans, growing up in Nebraska. What is very obvious is that these four siblings really are huge fans. Each came to love the Cubs when they came to Chicago in the late 1980s. Laura Ricketts tried to describe how just being immersed in the atmosphere of the ballpark and Wrigleyville the first time on a game day was "overwhelming." Do you remember your first time experiencing Wrigley, not just the game, but everything going on around the park as well as inside? It is overwhelming, and addictive. And as for those rumors that Tom met his wife in the bleachers, they are true.
The family, like all Cubs fans, wants the Cubs to win the World Series. In order for that to happen the new owners will have to invest in the best facilities, hire the best personnel, let them do their jobs and hold them accountable for their actions. Tom Ricketts made it clear that they all love Wrigley Field and want to improve the Wrigley experience, preserving the park for future fans. Ricketts also stated that they love the City of Chicago and they plan to be good neighbors and give back to the area.
It was refreshing to hear that the Ricketts are not a corporation. They have no "agenda." They love the Cubs, they are fans and they want to do what they can to bring a World Series to the city and team they love so much. It sounded like every other true fan. There were no airs. Tom Ricketts also emphasized that the family intends to be owners for generations.
Don't be surprised if you see any or all of them wandering around the park or in the seats or the bleachers. After all, they're also fans. As Laura Ricketts said, "It's also family pride."
Keep watching for more information from this press conference in the coming days.
