What’s worse? Losing both games of a double header, or losing both games of a double header to the Pittsburgh Pirates? Both are equally bad, but when push comes to shove, the answer would have to be losing both to the Pirates, which is exactly what happened yesterday.

Ted Lilly started the first game of a day/night doubleheader. While he didn’t do well in his first inning, he did settle down and didn’t pitch badly after that, but the damage was done and he received no offensive help from his teammates. The final score of the first game was 4-0. Carlos Zambrano got the call in the second game and didn’t fare any better. The final of the second game was 8-2. Not his best outing. It was the last appearance for the season for both pitchers.

Both games were played in front of a half full park at best. The announced attendance for game one was more than 34,000, but perhaps 12,000 showed up. Some of this can be attributed to the fact that it was a makeup game from August and kids are back in school and it wasn’t that warm out. But the second game, the scheduled game, also drew an actual crowd far below the announced attendance. It seems to be a trend this week. For the first time in recent memory, the center field bleachers were closed for game one. Some attributed that to the low attendance the night before. It brought back images of Jack Brickhouse in the 1960s telling viewers when the Upper Deck was OPEN.

During the second game of the double header, Section 301 in the far left field bleachers had at most 20 people at any one time causing one person to post to a popular blog that even her beer had a seat of its own.

With the forecast for rain tonight, it’s unlikely the Cubs will draw many to the park to watch Jeff Samardzjia pitch in his third and final starting role this season.

For all practical purposes the season is over for the Cubs, but there is a chance to see them play ball at home in October and rumor has it many tickets are available through the weekend.
