I wanted to do a post on San Francisco baking blogs until I realized...none of my favorite are in San Francisco! Two do feature former figures of the SF baking scene, so this is semi-local.

Why read blogs in the first place? A good baker blog, like these, will let you into the head of the person responsible for creating a variety of wonderful treats, whether these are faithfully-followed recipe treats or crazy ideas. And whether the blogger is a professional or a "home baker" as we in the industry call them, they are not afraid to share their mistakes. Burned the scones? Oversalted the cookie dough? Learned what a curdled custard looked like? If a blogger is being honest about his mistakes he's being honest about his successes, his ideas, the time he woke up in the middle of the night dreaming about peaches...

The Quenelle Modern and innovative restaurant desserts from Francisco Migoya, a chef and instructor at the Hudson Valley's CIA. You'll discover many materials you've never heard of but Migoya explains their uses and characteristics. A great place to find inspiration.

David Lebovitz Recipes, details of an American in Paris and, uh, more recipes from this ex-Chez Panisse pastry chef. This is a great resource for people with questions or who need a technique explained in great detail, with pictures.

Sweet Amandine Meditations on baking from a grad student in Boston. What we bake, why we bake, balancing a love of baking with a serious professional career in Something Else.

Desert Candy DC-area home baker Mercedes posts sweet and savory pastries with a Middle Eastern bent. Although not all recipes are Middle Eastern-inspired, they've got interesting stories that will definitely make you hungry.

Eggbeater Ex-SF pastry chef Shuna Lydon moved to London so her poems, occasional recipes and fruit-inspired blog posts no longer features SF's finest...but the archives are still full of suggestions on buying and cooking with Bay Area produce and Eggbeater often reviews new bakeries, books and products.

Bakin n Bacon Gorgeous photos and innovative recipes from Plinio Sandalio, a Houston pastry chef (at Textile and Gravitas). BnB showcases desserts like watermelon n feta, fried chicken and one inspired by the classic fast food combo of Wendy's fries and frosty.

Workbook Step inside the head of Michal Laiskonis, PC at Le Bernadin This blog offers an insight into what restaurant chefs think when they put together a dessert and occasional meditations on what offers a successful pastry cook.

Cupcakes Take the Cake Anything and everything cupcake-related from three NYC friends. CTTC includes recipes, photos of crazy/awesome cupcake ideas and a comprehensive directory of bakeries that sell cupcakes.

Ryan Zimmer
Meditations on baking from an American pastry chef living in Hong Kong. Zimmer offers insight into the tools and tricks of a professional as well as interesting issues that come up when cooking halfway across the world.
