The NBC paramedic television series "Trauma" begins filming for an episode today on the runway of the former Alameda Naval Air Station in Alameda.
Now called Alameda Point, the former Navy base is slated for redevelopment, but the old aircraft hangars are still being used for winemaking, boutique vodka production, as a giant sports complex, for distilled spirits production, and for TV and film production, among other uses.
Trauma location manager Gail Stempler waxed poetic about the unique San Francisco "backlot" location: "A fun way to see the City. A former marsh, now a patriotic lady and on the cutting edge of new, growing industries. A fun place to be as she turns from naval base to a home for new activities - a movie studio, distillery and vintners. Fresh air, bird song and great space...what more could you ask?"
Alameda Film Commission members estimate that a production such as Trauma can spend as much as $3 million per week.
