Zelda Wi concept art

The latest issue of Nintendo Power magazine contains a very brief and very cryptic quote from legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto regarding the next installment of the Legend of Zelda series being developed for the Wii. Says Miyamoto: “I don’t think it’s going to be that radically different.”

The comment comes as somewhat of a surprise, as the next Zelda will be the first built specifically for the Wii and therefore is expected to take the series into a bold new direction that takes advantage of the system’s unique capabilities. Add in the speculation regarding possible Wii Motion Plus integration with the new Zelda, something that could really shake up the way the series plays just as Phantom Hourglass did for Zelda games on the DS, and Miyamoto’s comment seems oddly in conflict with initial expectations for the project.

We likely won’t be getting sufficient information about the game to answer any of the questions this comment raises until next year’s E3, so until that time let the speculation resume.
