Bioshock 2, the hotly anticipated sequel to the dystopian, Ayn Randian hit game of 2007 has been delayed.
The extent of the delay was not specified upon. Developer Take-Two merely stated that the delay pushed Bioshock 2's release date out of the current fiscal year, which ends on October 31, 2009. This doesn't indicate that Bioshock 2 has necessarily been delayed until 2010, but it's likely that the first person shooter RPG won't be released before the holiday season.
This is definitely a blow to Take Two's financial expectations for the remainder of the fiscal year, and the developer reflected this by dropping their revenue projections for the quarter.
Fans of the series will no doubt be disappointed by the delay, but this is the right move by Take Two. Rather than rush the title out the door in order to feed the bottom line, Take Two is choosing to go the quality route to assure that the fans are satisfied and that the newest Bioshock title matches the superior quality of the first.
"We concluded that moving the release of BioShock 2 into fiscal year 2010 was the right decision for the product. We believe the result will be a more compelling consumer experience and a better performing product in the marketplace," Take-Two Chariman Strauss Zelnick said during a conference call yesterday. "We believe the value of the BioShock franchise will be maximized in the long term by taking this step."
Fans can now look forward to what will likely be a Q1 2010 release for Bioshock 2.
