Trailer Tuesday is a collection of the past week's major trailers, from the art-house to Hollywood, all are collected.
Almodovar. The name either means nothing to you or everything. Never in between. His latest, another collaboration with Penelope Cruz, is a dreamy, gorgeous set of passionate images, surely to wrap into a web only Almodovar knows how to weave. The film is set for a November release.
For non-film nerds, Steven Soderbergh’s new trailer may appear to merely be a solid comedy. To cinephiles who have been following its development, it’s a grand twist. For months this story of price-fixing, the FBI and conspiracy was thought to be Soderbergh returning to the realm of Traffic. Oops. Of course The Informant! - the ! is new as of this trailer’s release - is a laugher. Why else would Scott Bakula, Joel McHale and Tony Hale be involved. The film is set for an October release.
Now this is a horror movie sold perfectly. Minimal scares given away, plenty of atmosphere and a simple premise. Add to that one of the hottest actors today in Chris Pine (Captain Kirk of this year’s Star Trek) and this little film by the Pastor brothers appears to be appetizing thrills in the making. The film is set for a September release.
Director Jim Sheridan has made a career out of taking family problems and tightening in on them with unrelenting precision (In America, In the Name of the Father). Sheridan is back in that territory here, with a trio of performers who seem ripe for really meaty roles (Natalie Portman, Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal). The picture has the makings of something special, which could just as easily fall to pieces with acting and a script a note too high. The film is set for a December release.
A heavyweight tale here, with all involved supreme talents, from director Oliver Hirschbiegel to a cast including Liam Neeson, James Nesbitt and Anamaria Marinca. This won’t be easy going stuff but the footage reveals a stark, unrelenting movie about being tormented by the past. The film is set for an August release.
It’s always a treat to watch Audrey Tautou, particularly when she’s given the chance to stretch her significant serious chops. This biopic of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel is lovely to look at and hopefully will be more than that. The film is set for a September release.
From Peter Billingsley (a.k.a. Ralphie from A Christmas Story) comes a movie that might have a bit too many gags about male anatomy. On the other hand, Retreat has Vince Vaughn ripping out one-liners like nobody’s business (a.k.a. sign me up - as long as it’s not holiday related). The film is set for an October release.
Alvin and the Chipmuks: The Squeakuel
There is Alvin. There is Chipmunks. There are some new lady Chipmunks (the Chipettes). It is exactly what you think it is. The film is set for a December release.
Patton Oswalt is not the way you expect him to be in this picture by Robert Siegel, a veteran writer of The Onion and screenwriter of last year’s marvelous The Wrestler. Oswalt, best known for his stand up, goes dark and obsessed in Big Fan and it may open up some new doors for him. However, the film as a whole looks like a mixed bag, an unfocused meditation on how we define ourselves. The film currently has no set release date.
