Possibly the finest filmmaker working today’s latest and possibly last movie is finally about to arrive in U.S. theaters. Hayao Miyazaki’s picture has already received raves in its native Japan and its easy to see why. Miyazaki’s take on a classic fairy tale features his usual striking, imaginative eye, sweeping in scope and rich with color. The film is set for an August release.
Based on a story once already made into a “Twilight Zone” episode, The Box marks a major moment in the career of director Richard Kelly. After the slow burn of Donnie Darko, which opened to crickets and became a cult favorite to fans and critics, Kelly was largely laughed at for his followup Southland Tales. The Box will show whether or not Kelly is a one-hit wonder or a genuine talent. The footage is mesmerizing and the premise still remains fascinating, one just wonders if this extended take on the originally short story will be too laborious. The film is set for an October release.
Yes, this biopic on the life of Amelia Earhart may be Oscar bait but it is damn fine looking bait. Mira Nair’s passion is clear and intimidating, Hilary Swank looks superb (always the case when she is invested in a real part) and of course the true story is remarkable. Get the tissues ready. The film is set for an October release.
Ricky Gervais is already one of the funniest people in the world. Teaming him up with Tina Fey, Christopher Guest, Jennifer Garner and Rob Lowe just seems like showing off. This story of a man (Gervais) who becomes the the first person to ever tell a lie has all the makings of a standout comedy. The only worry is that the trailer has an element of Adam Sandler’s Click with a chance for sappiness and easy sex jokes. The film is set for a September release.
Vampires, which have always been popular, now seem to be everywhere in popular culture. However, what if they were literally everywhere and humanity as we know was a spec of blood on the run. That is the world the Spierig brothers conjure with Daybreakers, an action picture where society is run by those pale monsters, who discover their food supply, a.k.a. us, is about to become kaput. The design is solid, if a bit uninspired looking, but the casting is fun (Willem Dafoe & Sam Neill). A fun premise but one wonders if there is anything more than that. The film is set for a January release.
After a string of poorly received features, culminating in last year’s disastrous The Happening, M. Night Shyamalan takes a new path in this live-action adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon series. This teaser, though nicely shot, is conventional heading towards boring, yet fans of the original property are likely to find something to embrace. Newcomers are left with a fairly standard bit of martial arts and a faux epic scale. The film is set for a July 2010 release.
