According to boxofficemojo.com, A Christmas Carol took the top spot in theaters this weekend with $31 million. With no other Christmas movie out for some time to come, the animated picture has room to keep a certain audience. However, Carol cost nearly $200 million to make and despite the continuing trend of 3D pictures getting a big boost in revenue, the opening is on the small side.
In its second weekend, the Michael Jackson concert-film This Is It fell to the two spot ($14 million this weekend, $57.9 million overall).
The new comedy The Men Who Stare at Goats came in third with a solid if uneventful $13.3 million draw. With mixed reviews, the key will be word of mouth for the picture, and thus making next weekend a real sign of this movie’s success.
Also debuting this weekend was The Fourth Kind, appropriately enough in fourth. The sci-fi/horror picture made $12.5 million.
At fifth was Paranormal Activity ($8.6 million this weekend, $97.4 million). The little movie that could is now just days away from passing the $100 million line, a true feat of buzz, marketing and fine filmmaking.
Richard Kelly’s thriller The Box entered the charts at sixth with a meager $7.9 million first weekend out.
At seventh was Couples Retreat ($6.4 million this weekend, $96 million overall). Eighth belonged to Law Abiding Citizen ($6.2 million this weekend, $60.9 million overall). Coming in ninth was Where the Wild Things Are ($4.2 million this weekend, $69.3 million overall). Rounding out things was Astro Boy ($2.6 million this weekend, $15.1 million overall).
