Trailer Tuesday is a collection of all the past week’s trailers, from Hollywood to the art-house.
Now this is how to put a trailer together. Leave enough story out there, show off the talent (Colin Firth, Julianne Moore) and display some style and voila, something special. If the movie is half as elegant as this preview, and the early reviews say it is, then this will be a winner. The film is set for a December release.
The hype that Angelina Jolie’s newest film would basically be Bourne with a lady seems correct, which is perfectly fine by me. As a CIA officer accused of being a traitor, Jolie runs, runs and runs some more and the action by veteran director Philip Noyce is impressive in these two minutes. Add to that a cast including Chiwetel Ejiorfor and Liev Schreiber and this sounds like a possible gem, though knowing one of the writer’s was also behind the laughably bad Equilibrium leaves me worried. The film is set for a July release.
I get why studios release multiple trailers leading up to a big film’s release. What boggles the mind is when they release a second one, which is a cut-and-paste job; using the same music cues and gags, just with another one or two spoiled. It’s Complicated does just that, with a ton of similar footage, with a separate joke here and there. The maneuver just annoys and doesn’t add anyone new to the audience interested in seeing it. That said, as an avid Streep-aholic and Baldwin-something-or-other, I was sold from the word go. The film is set for a December release.

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Though there has been a backlash against Jake Gyllenhaal, I am remain firmly in his corner. That said, he seems possibly a bit miscast here as a acrobatic swordsman in this adaptation of the popular videogame series. He has the charisma to carry an action role, the body as well no doubt, but seeing him all dresses up in ancient garb leaping around comes off as awkward. Yet, the production design is striking and director Mike Newell can often hit out of the park (Donnie Brasco), even if he is coming off of (Love in the Time of Cholera). The film is set for a May release.
Perhaps it is merely my fandom of Maria Bello and William Hurt, but this little drama seems quite engaging. A trio of strangers all meeting and changing afterwards is pretty basic stuff but with actors like Bello and Hurt, the latter doing work far subtler than usual, is enough for me to get excited.
There is a moment early on here where Michael Clarke Duncan punches a swordfish. You’re either in or out at the moment and I’ll choose the former. The Broken Lizard crew goes big with their laughs and sophistication is never the name of the game. There success rate is faulty but when they land a good one, it’s hard to forget. After maybe the worst teaser in cinema history, Despicable Me has expanded into the first of what assuredly will be a barrage of trailers. I remain skeptical, even if the premise of the world’s second foremost super villain battling to be at the top spot is a fun one. It all feels extremely broad though. Deal-breaker comes with a quick look at the writers Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul’s whose resumes include The Santa Clause 2, Bubble Boy, College Road Trip and Cat’s Don’t Dance. Eep. The film is set for a July release.
