Last week, Google released a new feature for Gmail that allows users to "unsend" e-mail they've just hit the button on.
"My theory (which others shared) was that even just five seconds would be enough time to catch most of those regrettable e-mails," wrote Michael Leggett, Google's user experience designer, in a blog post last week.
Google Lab is a breeding ground for new and innovative ideas, while they're in their testing stages. Some Google applications that have come from Google Lab includes Google Maps, Google Transit, News Alerts and other things you probably use all the time.
"Turn on Undo Send in Gmail Labs under Settings, and you'll see a new Undo link on every sent mail confirmation. Click Undo, and we'll grab the message before it's sent and take you right back to compose," Leggett's blog goes on to say.
Other cool settings include Location in Signature, which can tell where the e-mail originated from, according to the e-mail's IP address.
Last, but certainly not least, is a setting that requires late-night e-mailers to solve simple math problems before the message is sent. Google Mail Goggles, as its being dubbed, is designed to safeguard those of us with a penchant for the drink and low levels of inhibition.
From a New York Times piece:
Kate Allen Stukenberg, a magazine editor in Houston, said that “the thing that is disappointing about Mail Goggles is that it’s only on Gmail,” because many people need cellphone protection, given the widespread practice of drunk text-messaging.
So, we'll just have to wait and see if Google puts Mail Goggles on the G1 Android anytime soon.
