Even in death, Michael Jackson is still the most popular draw in entertainment. An estimated 31 million people watched his star-studded farewell on Tuesday afternoon.

Nearly every major broadcast and cable news network carried the ceremony live, easily making it one of the most watched memorial services ever. According to Nielsen, about 21 percent of all U.S. households watched Jackson’s memorial, which coincidentally, was the same number of viewers who watched Jackson’s not-guilty verdict in his 2005 trial on sexual abuse charges.

In addition to TV ratings, millions of people watched the ceremony from their computers. Yahoo said it served 5 million live video streams, while the news website CNN.com counted 4.4 million.
