Currently, NBC has begun airing episodes of the BBC television program Merlin, about a young man who would one day become the most powerful wizard around and best known from the Arthurian legend. In this version of the tale, Merlin (Colin Morgan) is the same age as Arthur (mid 20's) and working as his servant. In his spare time Merlin assists Gaius, a man of science, who is aware of his powers. Gaius (Richard Wilson) provides Merlin with a book of spells to help him advance his skills while stressing that sorcery will lead to death.

The first four episodes have provided Merlin an opportunity to build a relationship with Arthur (Bradley James), who he is destined to help save the kingdom of Camelot. Merlin was informed of his destiny to protect and help Arthur by the last dragon, voiced by John Hurt. Since learning this, Merlin has had to prevent a knight from killing Arthur and a sorcerer (Michelle Ryan as Nimueh) from poisoning him.

Also involved in the program, Anthony Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as Arthur's father, King Uther and Katie McGrath as Morgana. Angel Coulby takes on the role of Gwen or future Queen, Guinevere.

NBC marketed the first 2 episodes by running a trailer of the upcoming Harry Potter movie, the "Half Blood Prince," and indicating that Merlin was the "first wizard." Unfortunately that didn't translate to ratings as Merlin brought in only 5 million viewers. The show is a mix of action/humor and reminiscent of the 90's programs, Hercules and Xena Warrior Princess. Many might point out inaccuracies with the stories but it is a re imagining of the Arthurian legend and should be given an opportunity to tell a new tale.

The BBC show ran 13 episodes and was picked up for a second season. Here in the states you can catch up with Merlin on NBC Sunday nights beginning at 8 pm and Hulu.com
