An easy ticket to paradise: Paddling the West Branch of the Sacandaga
The West Branch of the Sacandaga River offers some of the best easy canoeing in the southern Adirondacks. You meander for about ten miles through scenic marshes teeming with birdlife, with the option of taking side trips to Chub Lake and Trout Lake. It’s all flatwater, though you will have to get out of your boat a few times to pull around beaver dams.
Tom Woodman wrote a nice account of a trip on the West Branch in the current issue of the
Adirondack Explorer newsmagazine. You can find the story online
here with a map and trailhead directions. The put-in is only ninety minutes from Albany.
