Visitors to Lake Placid who are looking for a short outing have a new option: a 2.5-mile loop on the outskirts of town in a preserve known as Henry's Woods.
Locals have used the trail since last year, but its official opening took place this week.
The trail is five feet wide, and most of its surface is covered by gravel. It's perfect for trail running and nature walks. In winter, it will be a good cross-country-ski route, with exciting descents.
The trail was designed by Tony Goodwin, executive director of both the Adirondack Ski Touring Council and the Adirondack Trail Improvement Society.
Henry's Woods is named for the philanthropist Henry Uihlein. The 200-acre preserve is owned by the Uihlein Foundation.
Directions:From the NY 73, turn onto Old Military Road near the ski jumps south of Lake Placid village. Drive 0.8 miles to Bear Club Lane and turn left. Henry's Woods will appear on the right after a tenth of a mile.
