The Las Vegas 51s, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, shutout the Reno Aces, Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, in the final of their series 6-0 on Sunday night.
Las Vegas put up four runs in the third inning on their way to a fourteen hit victory. 51s catcher J.P. Arencibia lit up the scoreboard by going yard twice with a two-run shot in the fourth and a solo bomb in the sixth plus three RBIs. Left-fielder Aaron Mathews went 2-for-4 with a three-run shot in the third, and first-baseman Brian Dopirak went 3-for-4 with a solo shot in the third and three RBIs. Starting left-handed pitcher David Purcey earned his eighth win by throwing a complete game with five strikeouts.
Reno could not pull anything together offensively. Only three Aces got their bat on a ball: right-fielder Cole Gillespie, center-fielder Chris Roberson, and catcher Konrad Schmidt all went 1-for-3. The Reno bullpen was working overtime to try and stop the Las Vegas scoring machine. Starting right-handed pitcher Cesar Valdez earned his sixth loss by going three innings with five earned runs off of eight hits including two homeruns.
Las Vegas wraps up their final home stand of the season with a four-game series against the Fresno Grizzlies, Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, with Las Vegas lefty Fabio Castro getting the start for game one on Monday night. This game will also be the last Value Menu Monday game at Cashman Field so head on down to the ballpark and enjoy a great ballgame and a dollar dog.
