It was a defensive showcase and pitcher’s duel Thursday night at Cashman Field as the Las Vegas 51’s added another win to their record by beating the Reno Aces, Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, 2-0. This brings the 51’s, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, to a 36-and-45 win-loss record and puts them only 14.5 games back from the lead.

The 51’s only had six hits that brought in the two winning runs, but it was more than enough for the victory. Las Vegas second-baseman Joe Inglett led the way going 2-for-4 with a double, and outfielder Aaron Mathews went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Meanwhile RBI league-leader Randy Ruiz went 1-for-3 while first-baseman Brett Harper got his 45th RBI of the season. The pitching was spot-on for Las Vegas Thursday night with starting left-handed pitcher Brad Mills going a dominant eight innings with seven strikeouts and only two hits, and righty Jonah Bayliss earned his third save of the season.

Across the baseball diamond, the Reno Aces were as cold as they could be for this game with only four hits and no runs to show for it. Those four hits came off the bats of outfielders Trent Oeltjen and Brandon Watson, second-baseman Rusty Ryal, and third-baseman Ruben Gotay. In all, the Aces left three runners stranded and could move nobody into scoring position. Their dugout also suffered under this cold snap with Reno righty Bryan Augenstein earning his fourth loss going seven innings with two earned runs off of four hits and three strikeouts.

The fireworks were the most anticipated part of the night, and they will be happening again when these two teams take the field Friday night to continue the Silver State Diamond Challenge. Las Vegas lefty Fabio Castro will start for the 51’s on Friday with the first pitch scheduled to be thrown at 7:05 PM. Remember there will be another awesome fireworks show at the end of this game to celebrate Independence Day, so make sure you make it to Cashman Field on Friday to enjoy America’s Pastime and enjoy the fireworks after the game.
