The Las Vegas 51’s, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, brought the hammer down on the visiting Reno Aces, Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, with a 12-6 win in the first of a three-game home stretch.
The 51’s bats were on fire with five different players putting up doubles in the 16-hit slugfest. League-leader and Las Vegas first-baseman Randy Ruiz put up astounding numbers going 3-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs bringing his season total to 70. Second-baseman Howie Clark also had a big game going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a pair of RBIs, and designated hitter and 51’s outfielder David Dellucci went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Las Vegas left-fielder Aaron Mathews went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a stolen base. The 51’s dugout was also showing off its talents with starting lefty Davis Romero going four and one-third innings with four earned runs off of eleven hits, and winning right-handed pitcher Sean Stidfole went a dominant two and two-third innings pitched with three strikeouts.
On the other hand, the Reno Aces had some pretty strong offense but were unable to string anything together. Leadoff hitter and left-fielder Trent Oeltjen had the best night for the Aces going 4-for-5 with three double and a two-run long bomb in the ninth. Aces catcher John Hester went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI while second-baseman Rusty Ryal went 2-for-5 and got his 48th RBI of the season. Reno righty Hector Ambriz earned his sixth loss of the season in a five-inning showing with four earned runs off of nine hits and six strikeouts.
Wednesday’s game also tied up the Silver State Diamond Challenge at two games apiece in the 16-game series. Las Vegas lefty Brad Mills is going to start the game on Thursday night, which is also dollar beer night at Cashman Field. After Thursday’s game is an always spectacular fireworks show so bring out the family for that and a great game of baseball, and if you partake in some dollar beers please remember to do so responsibly.
