The Las Vegas 51’s are on a two-game winning streak after easily defeating the Sacramento River Cats on Monday night. The 51’s, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, beat the Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland A’s 4-2 during my favorite promotion at Cashman Field, Value Meal Night, with a combination of steady bats and tight-knit defense.
Las Vegas struck the scoreboard early with two solid runs in the third inning and put up ten runs total while bringing in the four winning runs. Lead-off hitter and second-baseman Joe Inglett went 3-for-4 with an RBI while outfielders Aaron Mathews and Jason Lane both put up doubles. First-baseman Brett Harper gained his 44th RBI while Randy Ruiz, who was the designated hitter for the game, kept his cold streak going with a 0-for-4 showing and a strikeout. The 51’s pitching crew wasn’t playing around either Monday night with lefty Marc Rzepczynski getting his second win going five and two-third innings with seven strikeouts and one earned run off of five hits, and righty Bryan Bullington earned his third save of the season.
Sacramento tried to make a late-game surge but just couldn’t string anything together. The two bright spots for the River Cats were shortstop Cliff Pennington who went 2-for-3 and got his third triple of the season, and first-baseman Tommy Everidge went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a solo long bomb in the eighth. Starting right-handed pitcher Jerome Williams earned his third loss of the season going six and two-third innings with three earned runs off of seven hits and three strikeouts.
Tuesday is the last game of this four-game series against the defending PCL champions with the first pitch scheduled at 7:05 PM and lefty David Purcey taking the mound for the 51’s. The final game of this series is also Blue Jays Tuesdays which includes beer specials and five buck general admission for anyone wearing 51’s gear, Blue Jays gear, or hockey jerseys. Head on out to Cashman and wear your favorite alien apparel to get in on the cheap, then get ready to cheer on the 34-and-44 Las Vegas 51’s as they host the 40-and-38 Reno Aces July 1st through July 3rd. Make sure you can make it on the third for the always awesome fireworks spectacular.
