Jesika and Heather enjoy the tree house at Wheeler Historic Farm

Children love animals! Why not take them for some furry fun this weekend without breaking your budget. Below is a list of my favorite places:

Wheeler Historic Farm. Horses, pigs and rabbits, oh my! Practically everything you’d find on a running farm is here, including a tree house! Located at 6351 S. 900 East., Wheeler Historic Farm is a great place to picnic and enjoy old-time surroundings. Come feed the ducks, or spend a whopping .50 cents per person and learn how to milk a cow. Only early risers allowed! Click here for more information.

Tracy Aviary. From the American White Pelican to the Sun Conure, birds of all persuasions will keep you learning and looking for hours! Today, 400 birds of 135 species make their homes at Tracy Aviary. Prices vary depending on age of child, but children under 3 get in for free. Visit Pioneer Day, July 24, 2009, and everyone in your party visits for free. The Aviary is located within Liberty Park at 589 E 1300 South.

Humane Society of Utah. Visits to the Humane Society of Utah are free of course. Take a gander at the cats and dogs, but don’t forget the hedgehogs and pot-bellied pigs! You can even take a dog of your choice out for a walk! Or try the Utah Animal Adoption Center  located at 1955 N. Redwood Road and see their beautiful horses! For additional shelters in Utah, click here.

Salt Lake County Fair Grounds. The 2009 Salt Lake County Fair will be held August 5-8 2009 at 2100 W. 11400 South. Admission is free. Entertainment, contests, activities and more! Expect to see some prize winning animals. There is a $5 parking fee per vehicle.

A little one enjoys the Petting Zoo. Photo courtesy of Gardner Village.

Barnyard Buddies Petting Zoo & Pony Rides at Gardner Village, 1100 W. 7800 South. Rabbits, sheep, chickens, alpacas, goats, llamas and donkeys! Cost is $2 per person. Want a ride on a pony? Cost is only $3 more. Open Monday through Saturday beginning April 1. Times are 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. through October 31.
