Renowned style-maker Diane Cole Stevens is the founder/ CEO of Cole Stevens Salon & Day Spa. Normally she is known for her clean, modern haircuts and an impeccable approach to signature-style. Her revolutionary cutting and shaping of the hair have lead many women away from the crutch of the 'perm.'
Steven's A-list clientele also includes men, who attend the salon for pampering of their own in the areas of massage, facials, and nail care.
This week at Cole Stevens Spa the focus has shifted to what is quickly becoming Stevens's first love, The Cinderella Foundation. Stevens seemed a bit preoccupied with the task for the weekends event as we began the interview, but her passion was evident when I asked her about the foundations beginnings in 2002. 'I was introduced to a 10th grade girl who had suffered from a history of family drug addiction, and an absentee father. My friend told me about seeing her sitting in church with her hair messed up, and blemished skin. She said the girl was hunched over with shame and self-esteem issues, and beside her sat her mother with track marks in her arms from obvious drug use.'
What began with the make-over of one girl as a result of over-exposure to crime, drugs, and prostitution, has become a 7 year journey of bringing girls from troubled backgrounds together for hair and spa services. The special bond of client and stylist initiates a process of bonding and mentoring that has changed the lives of countless young girls in the program.
The personal relationships forged with the young ladies has laid the groundwork for the Cinderella Foundation to provide everything from positive role models and school supplies to medical services. Stevens says the goal of the program is to develop a self-confident, well mannered, well-informed young woman and prepare her to achieve success in all future endeavors.
The Cinderella Foundation is gearing up for their annual fundraiser, 'Fashion With A Purpose', to be held Sunday, November 8, 2009, 2PM-5PM at the Luxurious Mandarin Oriental Hotel Ballroom, 1331 Maryland Avenue, SW, Washington, DC.
