To her devoted following, N'dambi is 'that ish', but for most... she's one of the fiercest, neo-soul vocal stylist that they have never heard, or maybe I should say that they never thought they heard.
The beautiful Dallas native was raised in a musical family and began to sing and play the piano at an early age, but it was her affiliation with Erykah Badu that allowed her to sample her wares. N'dambi performed as a background vocalist on Badu's much-touted debut album Baduizm, and co-wrote "Hey Sugah" on Badu's Mama's Gun.
N'dambi never looked back, self-releasing her debut album, Little Girl Blues in 1999. That album was followed by Tunin Up & Cosignin, and later 2005's, A Weird Kinda Wonderful.
After signing last year to the legendary Stax label's roster, N'dambi has put in work on her latest release, Pink Elephant, which she collaborated with veteran producer, Leon Sylvers III (Whispers, Shalamar & Gladys Knight & The Pips). Pink Elephant comes out this Tuesday, and there's already industry buzz that it's one of the year's best!
I recently caught up with N'dambi and I asked her what she had in store for listeners, and she said 'they can expect a collection of songs that are snapshots into the lives of different people with a backdrop of music-based new and familiar sounds. There is an effort to create memorable melodies amongs the canvas that the music provides.'
With striking presence and beauty to match, N'dambi is also the epitome of style. Ladies, you can check out my counter-part, Monica Byrd, the DC Women's Style Examiner for tips on channeling N'dambi's style. Not to worry guys, N'dambi personally offered up this advice on what her list of 5 essentials that make a man stylish...
When I asked N'dambi how she incorporates style into her music she said, 'style is something something born out of where you come from and what you get exposed to. The way one talks, walks, and thinksall influence how they would put a hat, dress and/or jeans on. I in corporate these thing into my craft by finding ways to please my palate be it watching a great movie, going to a vintage store in search of a great piece of clothing,to cooking a meal and presenting it in such a way that it too looks like art. Those things connect me to the spirit that helps me be creative.
Make it a point to get out this Tuesday to pick up Pink Elephant, and be sure to tell them that you DC Men's Style Examiner sent you!
