Although it was a holiday, Gideon was delighted to be at work feverishly typing on his computer. He was dressed in gray flannel trousers and a burnt orange cashmere vest that added a dose of color to his crisp white shirt. Holding court on his chair back was a vintage Harris tweed blazer with olive green undertones, and under his desk his customary mocha brown cordovan wingtips were tapping to the melodic sounds of N’damdi’s Pink Elephant.
Natalie, Gideon’s Malaysian assistant, was always beautifully dressed, and today was no exception. She wore a grey cashmere sweater dress that held on to every curve of her of her petite body as she made her way to Gideon’s office, and tapped gently on his door before entering. “Excuse me Mr. Clarke, President Obama’s office called to say the Insurance Industry report would not be required until next Tuesday. Gideon loosened his wool necktie shot Natalie a smile as he thanked her.
Outside Gideon’s office, gasps were percolating as ‘Icy Hot’ made her way down the isle bisecting the cubicles. ‘Icy hot’ was the moniker bestowed on her by the audience during her occasional visits to the office. The plaid lining of her Burberry trench coat fluttered behind her in slow-motion as she threw her cashmere scarf around her neck and sashayed in runway fashion. Classic Chanel sunglasses, and an Hérmes scarf that encompassed her bob haircut, added an air of mystery; however, the gossip and chatter, coupled with the finger pointing of the staff, spoke volumes.
After making sure that Gideon was okay for lunch, Natalie turned to exit his office as ‘Icy Hot’ pushed her way in. After nearly knocking her Natalie down, she stepped back and glared at her from head to toe and back… the look would have thawed an Eskimo. Now deflated, Gideon looked longingly at Natalie as she melted from his office. ‘I thought I asked you to toss those shoes,’ shrieked ‘Icy Hot.’ Gideon closed his eyes and breathed deeply as he bit into his tongue. ‘I was down the street at Everard’s clothing, so I decided I would stop by so you could take me to lunch.’ ‘I appreciate it, but I’m working on a report for the White House, so I can’t.’ Pissed, ‘Icy Hot’ perched on top of Gideon’s desk and typed a message into her iphone as her chrome heeled Ferragamo pumps swung to and fro. She then stood and slammed his door and stormed off. Gideon sat there exasperated as he gazed from his office window at the freedom journey of an eagle as it soared above some stormed clouds gathering in the sullen sky.
After work that day, Gideon picked up his iphone and reread the message ‘Icy Hot’ texted him. The nerve of her he thought as he mouthed the words from the text, ‘dinner tonight at 7PM sharp, and don’t be late. Gideon decided to stay a little longer to organize his desk, to clean his office, and then to sharpen his pencils.
As he struggle to get a grasp on his life, Gideon stopped to get a haircut, and it was there in the chair chatting with his barber, Shine, that he had an epiphany. From there, it was a crash course of shopping, and as Gideon climbed into his car with an array of shopping bags, he seemed to have a new attitude.
At home Gideon indulged himself with a quick steam shower, and then he began to get dressed. As he put on a stiff pair of selvedge jeans and a plaid shirt, he walked over to a mirror and stood there for a moment. He felt like a real ‘bad ass’, but something was missing. He then pulled out a box and removed a pair of hiking boots and methodically laced them up. He took one final look in the mirror and grabbed a shawl-neck cardigan and left the house.
Punctual as usual, Gideon arrived at the restaurant 10 minutes early, but he made it a point to sit in his car until it was ten minutes after seven. Then Gideon left the car and headed into the restaurant with a newfound swagger. Inside he noticed 'Icy Hot' sitting at a table typing into her iphone. As he approached, she stood with her mouth open as she perused his outfit. In a calm, but authoritative voice, Gideon commanded her to sit down. She then slowly lowered herself into her seat with a blank stare. She then leaned from the booth as she eyed his boots, 'you're wearing hiking boots!' she exclaimed. Gideon smiled confidently as he removed his shades and leaned on the table supporting his muscular frame, 'I've been thinking about taking up hiking for quite some time, and I'm starting today, so see you when I see you!' Gideon then turned and walked off without looking back as tears began to extinguish the heat of 'Icy Hot.'
