Russia’s RT reports that Moscow police arrested the Vice Counsel of the US Embassy, Robert Bond. According to the report, the police arrested him as a participant in an illegal opposition rally. The report does not identify the opposition group. According to the US Embassy, Mr. Bond was not a rally participant, but an Embassy observer. According to the report, Mr. Bond was arrested even though he presented diplomatic identification. According to the report, the police have released the diplomat.

International law requires nations to afford visiting diplomats immunity from their laws. Ironically, the rule originated from a British case involving a Russian diplomat. Assuming the accuracy of the RT report, this may be a rather egregious breach of international law.
