Delicious fruit and cream pies and Marie Callender's Restaurants (www.mariecallenders.com) are synonymous in Southern California. And yes, Virginia, there really was a "Marie Callender" who set up a wholesale bakery with $700 in seed money back in 1948 with her husband Cal, helped by son Don to sell their baked goods to area restaurants.
Don Callender passed away this week at the age of 81, retired from the pie franchise he helped found and market. It was Don Callender who persuaded his parents to open the first Marie Callender's Pie Shop, which he eventually sold to Ramada Inc. in the late 1980s when the chain had grown to 120 locations.
Don was representative of the best of the entrepreneurial spirit of the restaurant industry in California and although we never had the pleasure of meeting, we did enjoy a phone interview with him when we wrote for Restaurant Business Magazine.
Our condolences to the Callender family on Don's passing. We're lucky that his legacy - the Marie Callender's restaurant chain - lives on today. Forget your New Year's diet and visit one of their locations soon and enjoy some pie and coffee in Don's honor. This month's special is Banana Cream for $6.99.
Until our next food find...may all your food finds be fabulous!
