The community of Manhattan Beach has managed to keep its beach-side charm over the years. Now there's one more reason to be charmed into visiting this seaside city just south of LAX - SASHI Sushi & Sake Lounge (www.sashimb.com).

SASHI IS located on the historic site of the former Metlox Potteries (451 Manhattan Beach Blvd., 310-545-0400) which has been transformed into the Metlox Plaza collection of retail and dining operations.

Boasting the largest sake offering in the LA area, SASHI makes liberal use of fresh orchids in its cocktails and dishes. Quite an appropriate flower because it symbolizes the SASHI dining experience - beautiful and exquisite!  Enjoy your sake tableside in the restaurant or in the vibrant lounge adjacent to the dining room, accented by electric fushia colors.  Both rooms were designed by KAA Design Group to create a sleek, modern decor that is genial and inviting.

Three winners for an appetizing start to any meal are the Crispy Aspara (lightly beer battered tempera asparagus with seaweed aoli for dipping), Albacore Tuna with Crispy Onion, nicely paired with Chili Ponzu Sauce; and Spicy Tuna over Crispy Rice, a delicious contrast in textures and flavors.

Our favorite entree choice here is the Steak Katsu Sandwich, panko crusted and served with truffle French fries - this sandwich surpassed any traditional steak steadwich we've encountered. Tempura Tiger Prawns, light and succulent, are another great entree choice.

The Sashi Roll, one of the restaurant's seven signature rolls - gets two thumbs up featuring melt in your mouth bluefin, albacore and yellowtail tunas.  Chef Makoto Okuwa is a master at his art and general manager Leonard Matsumoto receives five-stars for assembling a staff that offers professional and attentive service that never lags. Portions of every dish are generous, great for sharing and very artfully presented.

The Dessert Bento Box is a wonderful finishing touch, including tofu cheesecake from in-house pastry chef Marcus direct from Germany who makes all of SASHI's gourmet sweets.

SASHI will win the heart of every sushi & sake lover, whether your visit is for lunch , dinner or just a relaxing cocktail, whether you dine indoors or on the comfortable outdoor heated patio --easy parking at this location in the underground garage - but bring plenty of quarters!! Great stocking stuffer recommendation for the kids and grandkids is "The Gift of the Christmas Cookie" book written by Dandi Daley Mackall, illustrated by Deborah Chabrian (www.zondervan.com).  "The Christmas Table: Recipes and Crafts to Create Your Own Holiday Tradition" is the latest release from cookbook author Diane Morgan and has wonderful suggestions for entertaining  and foods from your kitchen gift-giving (www.chroniclebooks.com).

Looking for that perfect Yuletide gift for the office? Check out the Big Christmas Wreath Cookie at www.supercookie.com. At $30, it's gigantic, colorful and delicious, with enough to feed everyone!

Until our next food find...may all your food finds be fabulous!
