What stands out in your mind as the best date you've ever had here in the District? What made it special?
Sometimes, even the most simple of activities can turn out to be the most memorable, fun or romantic, while others can involve "major productions" that leave you swooning for more. Unlooked for pleasures become treasures and it is often true that when there are no expectations that we are the most surprised. A good friend recently shared such an experience with me:
"It was an impromptu date. We had just met that day at a convention in town. It was a Friday night in June, and the convention gala had ended with a dance party to some chill tunes. We danced together, and when the party ended and the lights came on, I asked my dance partner, who was visiting from Arizona, if she wanted to go out and see DC by night. It was past midnight so I was not expecting a "yes", but that's what I got and so we rolled with it.
I took her on a drive by tour of the Iwo Jimo Marine Memorial in Arlington, and then the Lincoln Memorial in DC and the White House. We ended up on the Waterfront in Georgetown having drinks at Sequoia. It had rained earlier, and the air was cool with a dewy breeze. Because it had rained, the usually crowded open air bar at Sequoia was less densely populated, so we were able to better enjoy the scenery and each others company.
We stayed out late, past 4 a.m. and we held hands, but nothing more happened. I was 25 years old, and still a bit shy, and this was probably the most spontaneous thing I had ever done when it came to asking a woman out. The experience was almost like a rite of passage for me.
I never saw her again after the convention ended, we emailed a few times after she returned to Arizona, but that was about it. Nothing more came of that date, but nothing more needed to come of it. What we had shared was enough for that night. It was an amazing night, and although I have given the "DC by night" tour to other women, it was never as good as that first time. It usually never is.”
